Where trust, teamwork and success thrive
For over 50 years, NRAO employees have worked together to make NRAO the premiere astronomical observatory in the United States by designing, building and operating the most sophisticated radio astronomy instruments in the world. No obstacle is too big for its highly skilled and dedicated workforce. As in the past, the future of astronomy remains bright and difficult challenges lie ahead. NRAO employees succeed in an environment that invokes trust, teamwork and success. NRAO Management is committed to creating and sustaining this environment for every NRAO employee.
Trust, teamwork and success thrive where people treat each other with respect and dignity. There are no lines of authority, levels of education, or years of experience that separate NRAO employees when it comes to how we treat each other in the workplace. Every NRAO employee has the expectation to be treated with respect and dignity when doing their job. This expectation also extends to non-NRAO people who they must inter-act with in the course of their work. NRAO is committed to establishing and maintaining a culture of respect and dignity within its workforce and will promptly address situations that compromise this culture.
This website, and its partner document, outline NRAO’s expectations for employee behavior along with the neces-sary policies, support, training and enforcement.
Every NRAO employee is expected to conduct themselves in a professional and respectful manner at all times.
NRAO is committed to creating an environment where all employees and other individuals are treated with fairness and dignity. NRAO does not discriminate against employees or candidates for employment because of race, color, religion, age, gender, physical impairment or disability, veteran status, national origin, or other characteristic protected by law. NRAO does not tolerate bullying, harassment or any form of discrimination on the basis of any other personal characteristic.
An environment that embodies fairness and dignity fosters cooperation, mutual respect and trust. It also supports open communications. Good behavior is expected from all employees, regardless of their role in the Observatory. Good behavior is built on a foundation of:
Professionalism - Always act professional no matter what your job title is. Talk to everyone in the same tone and be pleasant. Treat others with respect no matter how well or poorly they are performing.
Honesty – Employees at all levels need to make the right choices. They need to own up to mistakes for the greater good. Admitting to mistakes will allow time to make corrections.
Trust – Employees and leaders need to be able to count on each other. There must be an understanding of "I have your back".
Responsibility – One of the most important workplace behavior ethics is responsibility. Each and every worker needs to know what is expected of them. It is then their responsibility to make sure they follow through. Employees have the responsibility of following policies and making the right decisions. Leaders can control this ethical behavior in the work-place by holding everyone accountable, especially with regard to their own actions.
Fostering a professional and respectful work environment is critical. All employees-including managers and supervisors-are expected to:
Maintain an environment of inclusion, respect and trust in their day-to-day interactions with others throughout the Observatory.
Understand and abide by all Observatory policies and procedures as well as contractual and legal requirements applicable to their jobs.
Understand that objectivity, integrity, and ethical behavior are essential to our continuing ability to discharge our important public service mission.
Additionally, managers and supervisors must:
Make a commitment to operate ac-cording to the highest standards of ethics and business conduct and effectively communicate this commitment to other employees.
Exemplify the meaning of leadership in their day-to-day interactions and decisions and commit to building and maintaining an environment of inclusion, respect and trust at every level throughout the Observatory.
Maintain a work environment that encourages open communication.
